Abstract
-
Frank E. Pinder, II, a 1933 graduate of FAMU, donated most of his collection of artifacts, papers, and Africana to the Florida Black Archives Research Center and Museum (MEBA) at FAMU in 1983. A cross-section of African history and culture, the collection includes paintings, tapestries, and cloth, protective shields from Zambia, necklaces from Mali, gold weights from Ghana, small iron figurines, and dolls from Liberia dressed in the colorful costumes of each of the independent African countries.
Other artifacts are associated with the Coptic Church of Ethiopia. Among those are a large brass processional cross mounted on an ebony block, a 250-year-old Bible, and an array of crosses, hewn in silver and brass and mounted on large panels.
Pinder was born in Key West and collected most of the objects during his career and travels in the newly independent states of sub-Saharan Africa. He had more than 40 years of international assignments related to agriculture with the Department of State and the United Nations, and received many honors.
